Domain Registrations > FAQ
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
GENERAL
How
do I go about registering for a domain name like http://www.[mycompany].com.sg?
The term "http://www.[mycompany].com.sg"
is a URL (Universal Resource Locator). SGNIC registers only third
level domain names (e.g. [mycompany].com.sg) and not URLs nor
hostnames (e.g. www.[mycompany].com.sg).
You can register your '.com.sg', '.org.sg', '.net.sg', '.edu.sg'
and '.per.sg' domain names with any of the six
registrars accredited by SGNIC.
For '.gov.sg' applicants, please visit http://intranet.dc.gov.sg
for information on submission of your domain name applications.
Alternatively, you may send your queries to ida_govsgreg_opn@ida.gov.sg.

What's
the difference between a domain name(eg: xxx.com.sg) and an URL(eg:
www.xxx.com.sg)?
A domain name is the textual address of the location of a set
of machines whereas the URL (Uniform Resource Locator) refers
to the location of a particular document on the Internet. When
you register xxx.com.sg, you are informing everyone that there
is an easier reference to a set of machines, other than their
specific IP addresses. The term, www.xxx.com.sg is a host name,
i.e. the name of a machine that resides within the xxx.com.sg
domain. It is common practice to have web servers running on hosts
with names as www (for World Wide Web). Before anyone can access
www.xxx.com.sg, there must be a record that one can look up which
maps www.xxx.com.sg to the specific IP address. This is done on
your primary and secondary name servers (provided by your own
machines or by your service providers).

How
do I know if a name has been registered?
You can check the availability of your domain name by using our
Online Whois at http://www.nic.net.sg.
^TOP
Are
there any restrictions on the types of domain names that I can
register?
Yes, these restrictions are specified in the Registration Policy
and Procedures Guidelines (RPPG).
^TOP
Will
registrants need to have agreements with the registry or registrars?
Yes, registrants need to have an agreement (Registrant
Agreement) with the registry (SGNIC) upon approval
of the domain name. They also need to have an agreement with the
registrar.
^TOP
Will
others be able to register my domain name with other registrars
if I have registered it with my registrar?
No, domain names are unique. The same domain name cannot
be registered with another registrar once it has been registered.
^TOP
If
two requests are submitted for the same domain name at the same
time, who would obtain the domain name?
Domain names are registered in SGNIC system on a first-come-first-served
basis. Thus, the first application request would obtain the name.
This is provided that the request meets the domain name requirements
stated in the SGNIC agreement.
^TOP
Which
organisations are eligible to register a domain name under .SG?
Please refer to the .SG
Domains page.
^TOP
Will
there be any limit to the number and category of domain names
I can register with the registrars?
There will be no limit to the number of domain names applied with
the registrars. Registrants may also choose to apply for domain
names with multiple registrars.
^TOP
Can
I contact the registry for help if I have a problem with the registrar?
Yes, a registrant may contact the registry for assistance if he
cannot get a satisfactory response or solution from the registrar.
However, it is advisable for the registrant to resolve the problems
with the registrar first since their relations are governed by
the contractual agreement signed between them.
^TOP
PAYMENT
Will
I have to make payment to SGNIC for registering the domain name
through a registrar?
No, SGNIC will not be charging the registrants directly for the
registration.
^TOP
Will
all registrars charge the same fees for domain names?
Unlikely since registrars will be offering their services on a
competitive basis. The charges to be levied by them will depend
on other services besides the domain name registration and renewal.
^TOP
CONTACT INFORMATION
Will
my details be available to all registrars and the public?
Generally, details will be available via
the WHOIS facility on the SGNIC website. Sensitive data, such
as the NRIC number will not be made available.
^TOP
Whom
do I contact when I need to update my details?
You may refer to your registrar for update
of your contact details.
^TOP
RENEWAL
What
is the maximum number of years a domain name can be renewed with
a registrar?
Each domain name may be renewed for a maximum
period of 2 years.
^TOP
TRANSFER
How
do I transfer my domain name from one registrar to another registrar?
Who will be the approving authority?
The registrant should first obtain a "domain transfer password" from his current registrar. Next the registrant should approach the new registrar
(winning registrar) with the domain name to transfer and its transfer password. The winning registrar will
then submit a ‘transfer of registrar’ request to SGNIC.
Although the current registrar (losing registrar) may require
any outstanding payments to be made before the domain name is
transferred, it should not prevent the transfer from taking place.
The current registrar (losing registrar) may explicitly approve
or reject the transfer request. If the current registrar chooses
not do anything, the transfer process will be approved by the
SgR2R system after 7 days from the date of the transfer request.
SGNIC will then inform the two registrars whether the transfer
request has been approved.
^TOP
How
do I transfer my domain name to another registrant within the
same registrar?
This will depend on the implementation
of the transfer procedures of each registrar. Please consult your
registrar.
^TOP
IP ADDRESSES
How
do I get IP addresses?
Please get your IP addresses from your Internet
Access Service Provider (IASP). The Asia Pacific Network Information
Center (APNIC) is the authorised IP registry for the Asia Pacific
region. APNIC has delegated IP registry functions to the three
IASPs in Singapore. For more information, please check APNIC's
WWW page at http://www.apnic.net.
